How I Found Community Through Traditions

At first, I didn't fully grasp the significance of the Pittsburgh Fellows program, but as time
went on, I began to see its true value. One of the greatest gifts it offers is the sense of
community it creates. For me, this sense of community has been most evident in the
special tradition that has formed with my Center for Hope volunteer group: Heather, Alex,
Ava Jade, and Dan, a Pittsburgh Fellows alum.
Each month, we spend an hour serving at the Center of Hope in Ambridge, PA. We
stock shelves, break down boxes, and help wherever needed. It’s simple work, but the
impact feels profound when we do it together. There’s something powerful about
showing up consistently to contribute, no matter how small the task, and knowing we’re
making a difference.

After serving, we head to Bridgetown Taphouse. It’s our spot. We always sit at the same
table, in the same seats, and savor the delicious food while enjoying rich conversations.
Whether we’re laughing over something silly or reflecting on life, these moments have
become a highlight of my month. It’s not just about the food or the routine—it’s about the
bond we’ve formed and the memories we’re creating together.

This monthly tradition has brought so much joy and connection to my life. It’s taught me
the value of creating spaces where people can gather and feel a sense of belonging. As
the program nears its end, I’ve found myself cherishing these times even more. They’ve
reminded me how meaningful it is to be intentional about building traditions, no matter
how small they may seem.
I know I’ll miss this routine when this chapter ends, but I’ll carry the lessons it’s taught
me. The power of community, the importance of consistency, and the joy of shared
experiences are things I hope to continue cultivating in my life. For now, I’m just grateful
for the people, the memories, and the traditions that have made this experience so
special.
