What Does Work Mean in the Eyes of Christian?

As a Pittsburgh Fellow, I have been learning a lot in our Tuesday Roundtables. One of the big takeaways for me is changing the way I view work. I used to view work as just a way to make money, but now I am understanding that work is my ministry. Work is a place where I can be a light and reflect God’s glory by doing excellent work. Even performing a simple task with excellence helps my team reach a goal faster. The following Scripture verse helps me remain focused on this greater purpose: ”Whatever work you do, do it with all your heart. Do it for the Lord and not for men.” Colossians 3:23.
What does viewing work as a ministry look like on a day-to-day basis? It's viewing the completion of training videos as an opportunity to get equipped to do my work well as a tax accountant. It's approaching down time as an opportunity to reach out and help other departments, building connections across the office and providing relief in their busy periods. It's building strong organizational habits, so I can prioritize work and meet deadlines.
Pittsburgh Fellows has been so impactful in my growth as a godly woman in the workforce. My business mentors and colleagues have given me advice that helps me work efficiently. Some advice that I have been given during this program by colleagues and my business mentors is to stay organized at work and don't be afraid to ask questions. By developing organizational systems and asking thoughtful questions, I am better able to know which work to prioritize in order to meet deadlines. Viewing my work as service to the Lord has shaped my approach to work and taught me to work with excellence in all things.
