What is Godly Work?

Throughout this year of Pittsburgh Fellows, we have met almost every Tuesday night for Roundtable. Roundtables come in three forms: a special speaker, a volunteer night, or a small group led by Fellows alumni. My favorite Roundtables are those of the small groups. We have spent time going over books such as Every Good Endeavor by Tim Keller and The Spiritual Art of Business by Barry L. Rowan. Participating in these small groups has helped me to ask questions about what godly work is and to reflect on Christ.

In my fellowship, I was placed at Urban Impact, a non-profit on the North Side of Pittsburgh whose goal is to provide underserved youth with the resources they need to succeed and share the gospel with them. At the start of my Fellows year, I was excited to work for this organization because it is a Christian environment, and that meant my work was serving God. While I'm still extremely excited to be working for Urban Impact and supporting the amazing work they do, I have realized, through our Roundtable discussions, that godly work is so much more than being employed by a Christian organization. In fact, all Christians are called to and capable of doing godly work no matter where they are employed. My roundtable small group has developed my thinking on godly work and has taught me that godly work is an attitude that is put on every morning and a conscious effort to seek to serve those around you everyday and to love more like Christ.
