Working Beyond The To-Do List

pghfllws

As we get back into the swing of things in our second semester as Pittsburgh Fellows, we’ve had many conversations about how easy it is to just go through the motions. To push through days at work on autopilot, and fill our weekend with so many activities and tasks that there isn’t a moment of rest. But while doing so, I’ve realized that my focus becomes centered on my to-do lists and accomplishments more than anything else. I begin to fail to appreciate time with my business mentors, fellows class, and alumni. We lack time for rest with one another, and in the Lord.

While at the TFI Conference in Washington, D.C. in November, we heard from Russ Whitfield about our role in the Church and our calling to be more like Christ. He said, “you can check everything off of your to-do list and look nothing more like Jesus.” When my focus is only on what I feel I need to get done, I lose sight of why I wanted to be a Pittsburgh Fellow in the first place. I came in search of Christian community, but with this mindset, I miss out on the opportunity to grow in Christ in that community.

With this in mind as we continue our year as Pittsburgh Fellows, I want to avoid going through the motions and pushing through each week. As we started this semester, we prayed as a class that we would make the most of the rest of our time together and not take one another for granted. We’ve started praying together as a class weekly and checking in on one another’s spiritual goals more frequently. We sit together at church and discuss the sermons over lunch. We continue to strive to see God in our work and work to glorify Him at our Fellows placements. While it could be easy to coast through to May and the end of our year together, I want to continue to grow together in the Lord. I pray that we continue to take time to pause and think about how we can look more like Jesus, rather than check things off of our to-do lists.
